MBD 40' Cruiser Racer

Design Concept

Designed by Andy Dovell, of Murray Burns Dovell, to be the most powerful yacht that could be packed into a container, or towed on a trailer without the need for a heavy vehicle licence, the Radical One needed to be lightweight, but also needed to be stiff and strong, to withstand the rigours of performance racing.

Mac Dalton from ATL Composites, worked with Andy and Mike Rose of Radical Yachts, Sydney, to build the ultimate 40' containerable, canting-keel yacht.

Construction

DuFLEX™ Composite strips, cored with a combination of AIREX® and Corecell® structural foams, were manufactured by ATL Composites to build the hull of the Radical 40. The strips were manufactured with a unidirectional E-fibreglass on each side,  and additional carbon unidirectionals were vacuum-bagged and post-cured with a selection of ATL's high performance KINETIX® epoxies to complete the structure.

ATL's standard Techniglue-CA R60 paste adhesive was used in edge-gluing the DuFLEX strips, and the new Techniglue-HP R15 toughened adhesive provided excellent adhesion in specific locations that required high peel strength.

KINETIX R240 / H341 wet-preg system was used in the construction of the carbon-cored keel fin and rudder, to produce excellent mechanical properties, including improved toughness.

Mac provided on-site construction support to ensure that the project proceeded smoothly, and met design and construction specifications.
